DIY Hack: Using Your KUDDE Dog Bed Outdoors
The KUDDE dog bed is a retreat for your dog, where he should lie comfortably and dry. Therefore, it is important that you do not use the KUDDE dog bed outdoors without a proper base. This base should also be air-permeable and robust, and raised so that no moisture can penetrate.
A stylish solution for your outdoor dog bed: a Euro pallet, preferably in elegant white
The Euro pallet is made of wood, which inherently has good outdoor properties, and can be moved to the desired location without much effort due to its low weight. You can get ready-made Euro pallets in many hardware stores. You might even get used pallets for free from a logistics company near you if they are going to be disposed of anyway. You can recognize an original European pallet by the oval EPAL logo of the European Pallet Association. Also, make sure that the abbreviation MB is not on the pallet, as this indicates that the pallet was fumigated with methyl bromide, which has been banned since 2010 due to its toxicity.
How to design the Euro pallet as a base for your dog bed
If the shabby chic or vintage look isn't for you, you can color the pallet according to your wishes and to match your KUDDE dog bed. Everything you need can be found at your local hardware store.
Here's how:
- Sand and smooth the entire Euro pallet with an orbital sander.
- Completely paint with a paint roller and primer (insulating primer / impregnation) – this isolates the substances in the pallet wood and prepares the pallet for the paint.
- After drying, you need to roughly sand the Euro pallet again; it's best to use a multi-sander for this, and a sanding sponge for hard-to-reach areas.
- Now completely paint with a wood varnish in your desired color using a paint roller and brush.
- Allow to dry for about two more days, and you're done!
Are you rather clumsy? Then you'll be happy to know that many hardware stores, online shops, and even Amazon now offer white-painted Euro pallets that you can use directly as a structure for your outdoor KUDDE dog bed.
Euro pallets have a standard size of 120 x 80 cm, making them directly usable for KUDDE dog beds in sizes S, M, and L. If you have a KUDDE dog bed in size XL or XXL, you will need to combine two Euro pallets to use them as a base for your dog bed. It's best to screw these together on the underside, for example, with several flat connectors and four to twelve stainless steel Spax screws (which don't rust like normal Spax screws) at several points, so that your dog doesn't push the pallets apart with its movement and, in the worst case, slips and gets caught between the pallets.
Is the KUDDE even suitable for outdoors?
Basically yes, apart from the limitations mentioned above due to cold and damp surfaces. And even in wet and rainy conditions, you should not leave the KUDDE dog bed outside, but bring it in in good time.
